Resumen

The increasing use of electronic cigarettes among university students has become a relevant public health concern due to its potential impact on respiratory health. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of e-cigarette use among university students in Ecuador and to analyze its association with respiratory symptoms. A quantitative, descriptive-correlational, and cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 360 students from three universities, identified as University 1, 2, and 3. Data were collected through a structured survey and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The main results revealed that a significant proportion of students reported current or occasional use of electronic cigarettes, with higher prevalence observed in specific groups. Additionally, a notable percentage of participants reported respiratory symptoms such as cough, shortness of breath, and phlegm. The analysis showed a clear association between e-cigarette use and the presence of these symptoms, with current users presenting a higher frequency compared to non-users. In conclusion, the study highlights that the use of electronic cigarettes is prevalent among university students and is significantly associated with respiratory symptoms. These findings underscore the importance of implementing preventive strategies, health education programs, and regulatory measures to reduce the risks associated with e-cigarette consumption and to promote healthier lifestyles among young adults.
